Villanova Women’s Basketball Dominates VCU in Toronto
Villanova Women’s Basketball rebounded to defeat VCU 74-40 in Toronto, Canada on Sunday, Nov. 9, playing dominant defense as they held the Rams to a 33.3 shooting percentage and forced 22 turnovers.
Star guard Jasmine Bascoe, who grew up in the Toronto suburbs, led the Wildcats (2-1) with 17 points, five rebounds, and four assists, while six foot tall guard Kennedy Henry showed off her versatility, scoring six points on 2-of-5 shooting but adding six rebounds, seven assists, four blocks and a steal in 28 minutes played.
Brooke Bender (16 points) and Denae Carter (12 points) also finished in double figures.
Villanova took time to find their shot, making just four of 17 shots in the first period. Relying on the three-ball (2-of-10) hurt the Wildcats, but they forced five turnovers to keep the Rams’ lead at 11-10.
The Wildcats took a less aggressive shot profile in the second period, attempting just five of their 15 shots from beyond the arc, and immediately began to pull away, pushing their lead to nine with an 11-2 run midway through the frame. Bascoe led the charge with seven points in the second quarter, including an arcing layup just before the buzzer to put Villanova in front 37-23.
The Wildcats began the third on a 9-0 run, maintaining their defensive pressure as they pushed their lead past 20. Villanova forced six turnovers in the fourth quarter and allowed just three of 14 shots to fall, putting the finishing touches on their dominant win.
Up next, Villanova Women’s Basketball will return to the Finneran Pavilion, where they’ll host Princeton at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
