Villanova Men’s Basketball added to their staff on Wednesday, June 17, announcing the addition of Sports Performance Coach Kyle Tarp.

Per the Wildcats’ press release, Tarp occupied a similar role at the University of Maryland from 2010 to 2025, getting to know Villanova head coach Kevin Willard during the three years they overlapped in College Park. Willard said in the release that “it’s great to bring Kyle on board here at Villanova. He is an elite performance coach whose knowledge and experience will benefit our players’ development.”

While they don’t receive the same level of notoriety that players and recruiters do, performance, training and conditioning coaches play a similarly critical role. The NFL’s San Francisco 49ers have made headlines in recent years for the disproportionate waves of injuries their players deal with and, while they’ve made the Super Bowl twice this decade, they’ve never managed to break through and win the big game: injuries and conditioning, arguably, have played a role in those struggles.

As such, bringing an accomplished contributor like Tarp — who oversaw all aspects of the Terrapins’ training and nutrition — into the fold could provide a much bigger impact on Villanova’s fortunes than one might initially think.
