Villanova guard Wooga Poplar was ejected for throwing an attempted punch during the first half of the Wildcats’ Monday, Jan. 20 game against the Georgetown Hoyas.

Poplar, a senior and Philadelphia native who led the now-defunct Math, Civics and Sciences Charter School to a state championship, leads Villanova with 6.8 rebounds per game and ranks second in points scored with 14.5.

Poplar’s ejection occurred when he got involved in a dust-up with Georgetown freshman Thomas Sorber with 12:27 to play in the opening half. Standing in front of the Hoyas’ bench with a referee and guards Curtis Williams Jr. and Jayden Epps in the area, Poplar appeared to exchange words with someone. It didn’t look particularly heated at first, but as Sorber — another area recruit who attended Philadelphia’s Archbishop Ryan High School — made his way over to the scrum, he pushed Poplar out of the way, prompting Poplar to swing.

Both Sorber and Poplar received technical fouls for the play, which went to an official review that resulted in Poplar’s ejection.

Poplar spent the first three years of his collegiate career at the University of Miami before transferring back to Southeastern Pennsylvania for his final season of eligibility. Despite his ejection, Villanova held a 23-20 lead over the Hoyas as of the time of this article’s publication, with 6:48 to play in the first half.
