College basketball analyst Ken Pomeroy began tracking the statistical performance of programs across the country during the 1996-97 season, centering the eponymous KenPom rankings — first published online during the 2001-02 season — around their offensive and defensive performance per 100 possessions.

Dating back to that 1996-97 campaign, Villanova Men’s Basketball ranks as the No. 11 team in the country, which seems extremely low given their run of success. Just four teams (UConn, Duke, Florida and North Carolina) surpass the Wildcats’ two championships since 1997. Two other teams, Kansas and Kentucky, match them during that span.

What brings their ranking down? The Wildcats and their fans have enjoyed some of the highest highs of any program in the sport, but it’s their down years that keep them from climbing further up the historic KenPom rankings. They’ve missed the NCAA Tournament ten times since 1997, including just one appearance between 1998 and 2004 and three straight missed tournaments during the Kyle Neptune era.

The team immediately ahead of Villanova at No. 10 on the list is UConn, which has six national championships since 1999. Consistency matters more than volume of success when looking at the all-time standings, at least through the lens of Pomeroy’s metrics.

The top ten read as follows: Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, UNC, Arizona, Florida, Michigan State, UCLA, Texas and UConn.
