Typically thought of as a juvenile escapade, prank calls quickly became the talk of the NFL Draft after quarterback prospect Shedeur Sanders, son of Pro Football Hall of Fame member Deion Sanders, fell victim to such a call during his shocking slide down draft boards.

St. Joseph’s Prep alumnus and Eagles draft pick Kyle McCord said he fell victim to a series of similar prank calls before Philadelphia finally selected him in the sixth round, the No. 181 pick. The prank calls got bad enough that when McCord eventually did get the call from Eagles’ general manager Howie Roseman, he thought it was another joke.

“I got a few prank calls earlier in the day from 609 numbers, 215 numbers,” McCord said in a video interview after the draft. “So I’m like alright… when I got that 215 phone call I was thinking it was just another prank call… sitting there, anxious to see what area code pops up.”

Finally, McCord received another phone call from a Philadelphia area code. This time, it was legit.

“To hear Howie’s voice on the other side, I was like alright, that’s not what I expected, but super pumped that it happened,” McCord said.

The 6-foot-3, 218 pound quarterback prospect graduated from St. Joseph’s Prep in 2021 after leading the Hawks to three consecutive PIAA state championships. He passed for 58 touchdowns across two seasons as a starter between Ohio State and Syracuse, and will compete for a backup quarterback role behind Eagles’ starter Jalen Hurts.
