Villanova Men’s Basketball needs a point guard for next season and, so far, reports have only linked them to one target, Arkansas transfer and former top five recruit DJ Wagner.

The Wildcats will need to look elsewhere, however, as Wagner committed to Maryland on Saturday, April 18, per a report from Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports. The Terrapins and the Wildcats have (mostly one-sided) bad blood after Villanova head coach Kevin Willard departed College Park for the Main Line in 2025, but with the two teams playing in different conferences, Wagner’s recruitment won’t become the catalyst for much drama.

None of the five players currently set to play for the Wildcats next season — Tyler Perkins, Matt Hodge, Adam Oumiddoch, Kwame Evans Jr. and Devin Royal — fit at point guard, so expect the market to pick up in the coming weeks.

Most of Villanova’s recent transfer buzz has come at shooting guard: they’re well-equipped on the wing but could want a bona fide shooter as their sixth man. Current targets include Arkansas State’s Camren Hunter, Saint Mary’s Mikey Lewis and Cornell’s Jake Fiegen.

Hunter will need a waiver to obtain another year of eligibility, so Villanova just kicked the tires with a Zoom interview; Fiegen, similarly, is a graduate transfer, while the Wildcats could build around Lewis for two seasons. They currently have ten roster spots open after losing all but two players from last year’s NCAA Tournament caliber roster to graduation or the transfer portal.
