Villanova Forward Nnanna Njoku Undergoes Knee Surgery

Villanova redshirt junior forward Nnanna Njoku underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Wednesday, Jan. 15, per a report from the team.
While there’s no timetable for his return yet and the exact nature of the surgery wasn’t disclosed, per the wording of the report, it appears his season is over. Njoku last played in the Wildcats’ Dec. 11 win over FDU.
A former four-star recruit and member of the ESPN Top 100 for the class of 2021, Njoku has appeared in just 34 career games. Last year, surgery on the other knee brought his season to a premature end, while a combination of illnesses and injuries limited him to just four games during the 2022-23 campaign, qualifying him for a medical redshirt.
Njoku averaged 9.4 minutes off the bench in ten games this season, backing up fellow power forward Enoch Boakye and pulling down 2.1 boards per game as a defensive stalwart in the low post, an important role (if sparsely used) in Villanova head coach Kyle Neptune’s guard-heavy lineup. Assuming he isn’t able to get another medical redshirt year — NCAA rules exhaust a year of eligibility if players appear in a single game during the season in question, but oft-injured players often manage to receive an exemption, as Njoku himself did in 2022-23 — Njoku will have one year of eligibility remaining.
