Saint Joseph’s Legend Jameer Nelson Named 76ers Executive Vice President
Saint Joseph’s Men’s Basketball legend and Southeastern Pennsylvania native Jameer Nelson will serve as the 76ers No. 2 executive, with ESPN insider Shams Charania announcing on Sunday, June 7 that the organization promoted Nelson to Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations.
Nelson, who grew up in Delaware County and attended Chester High School, played for the Hawks from 2000 to 2004 under head coach Phil Martelli Sr. He won the National Freshman of the Year Award during his debut season and led Saint Joseph’s to a 30-2 record and the Elite Eight in 2004, cleaning house with national plaudits like the Wooden Award and Oscar Robertson Trophy.
Nelson went on to play 14 years in the NBA and began to climb up the executive ladder after his playing career ended, serving as Assistant General Manager of the Delaware Blue Coats, the 76ers’ G-League affiliate, before getting promoted to that same role with the NBA club in May 2025.
With the 76ers looking for a change of leadership in the form of Mike Gansey, a longtime executive with the Cleveland Cavaliers, they decided to promote from within, giving Nelson a further chance to make his mark on the City of Brotherly Love.
