Report: Villanova Quarterback Pat McQuaide Deemed Ineligibile by Patriot League
What a welcome. Villanova Football’s new conference, the Patriot League, denied Wildcats starting quarterback Par McQuaide eligibility for the 2026 season, per a report from Conor Smith of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
McQuaide began his college career at Kent State as a walk-on in 2021, redshirting that season before transferring to the junior college level at Mississippi Gulf Coast in 2022. He then spent two seasons at Nuckolls State (Division I – FCS) before heading to Villanova for the 2025 campaign.
The NCAA ruled in 2025 that seasons spent at the junior college level didn’t count against the four years of playing time awarded to all athletes. Players who began their college careers in 2019, such as West Virginia’s Jimmori Robinson and Tye Edwards, were able to squeeze out a final season of eligibility last year as a result. Given that 2025 ruling, McQuaide’s season at Mississippi Gulf Coast shouldn’t count against him, meaning he used a redshirt year (Kent State) and three years of eligibility (Nuckolls State and Villanova).
NCAA Flips a Coin
Contrary to their 2025 ruling — and right in line with their mercurial behavior on everything else — the NCAA denied McQuaide’s initial eligibility waiver request. That’s what the Patriot League’s argument centers around, a move that McQuaide’s attorney, Richard Hamilton Jr., called “extraordinary” in Smith’s report. Following the NCAA’s ruling, an Ohio court injunction granted McQuaide an extra season of eligibility… so while the courts might have something to say about the Patriot League’s decision, the clock is ticking.
Villanova’s season opener is set for Friday, Aug. 29 against William & Mary. If McQuaide isn’t able to scramble up a case in that time, the Wildcats — picked to lead the Patriot League and ranked as one of the top ten teams in the FCS according to preseason polls — will roll with either senior Robert Russo or true freshman Nolan DiLucia under center.
