Villanova Film Room: Traditional Big Man Abdou Samb

This is one in a series of stories reviewing film for each player on Villanova Men’s Basketball’s 2026-27 roster. 

Villanova graduate transfer Abdou Samb began his college career as an athletic three-star recruit, spending time in the Rhode Island Rams’ starting lineup as a redshirt freshman. From there, his career began to trend in the opposite direction. Despite his solid performance in the CAA, Samb decided to transfer down to IU Indianapolis, where he put up the best numbers of his career playing against low-major competition during the 2023-24 campaign. Samb then transferred to Towson, where he served as a reserve, before an Achilles tendon injury wiped away almost all of last season.

Now in the twilight of his college playing days, Samb will serve as a reserve forward with Villanova. Because his playing time tapered off as his career went on — a point of concern for any player — a game against Providence during Samb’s time with Rhode Island provides the most extensive film of his play style: admittedly, he won’t be the same player he was four years ago.

Early in his career Samb was an active defender, moving well even though he was at a disadvantage against high-major competition. The Friars managed to push him around at times, but Samb put on 10 pounds in the intervening years. Similarly, his attempts to back down defenders and finish at the rim came with mixed results. 

Focus at the Rim

A traditional power forward, Samb has yet to take a three-point shot in his college career. His targeted offensive highlights while with the Rams show him finishing on alley oops and trying for the occasional catch-and-shoot from midrange. While his wingspan helped him hook passes around defenders down low, his 34 career assists and 77 turnovers indicate he won’t provide much of a threat to kick the ball out.

Highlights from IU Indianapolis’ March 2024 loss in the Horizon League tournament show Samb enjoying a far greater level of success jockeying for position in the paint, albeit against a far lower level of opponent.

With Matt Hodge expected to miss some time as he completes his rehab from an ACL tear, Samb could see extra playing time with Villanova early in the season. Samb’s recovery from that Achilles injury could prove problematic, and he’s likely reached his ceiling as a player, but his experience should help him serve as a capable backup playing limited minutes.
