Phillies Prospect Watch: Gage Wood Pitches His Best Game in Double-A
Phillies’ affiliates went 2-4 on Friday, Aug. 21, with 2025 first round pick Gage Wood pitching his best game since promotion to Double-A in late May.
Wood covered five innings on 86 pitches, the most he’s thrown in the pros, in a 5-2 win for the Fightin Phils. He also struck out five batters and allowed just one unearned run. Bryan Rincon homered; Carson DeMartini drew two walks but also got caught stealing and committed a fielding error at third, while right fielder Raylin Heredia singled and walked.
Triple-A Lehigh Valley managed just three hits and three walks in an 8-0 loss, Otto Kemp reaching base twice as the top contributor. High-A Jersey Shore dropped both legs of their doubleheader. A Devin Saltiban error with two outs spiraled into a three-run meltdown in game one, and triples from Juan Villavicencio and Brady Day weren’t enough to cut into the deficit. The nightcap saw righty Tanner Gresham allow two runs in four innings, striking out four batters, but a two-hit performance from the BlueClaws’ bats doomed them to failure.
Single-A Clearwater endured a 10-2 thrashing as Phillies’ 2025 fourth round pick Sean Youngerman got pummeled for six runs (five earned) in five innings. Caden Bogenpohl and Nolan Beltran doubled, and 21-year-old righty Gerardo Lopez pitched two clean innings in his first relief appearance since promotion from rookie ball.
Elsewhere in the organization, the Phillies’ Dominican Summer League affiliate won their second game in postseason pool play: top outfield prospect Francisco Renteria walked, hit an RBI single and scored a pair of runs.
