Villanova Forward Josiah Moseley Ruled Out Due to Illness

When Villanova Men’s Basketball hosts Creighton at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, Feb. 1, they’ll play with a shorter bench than usual, as the team announced that freshman forward Josiah Moseley was ruled out with an unannounced illness less than an hour before tipoff.

Moseley has appeared in all 21 games for the Wildcats this season, averaging 12.6 minutes per night off the bench, the second-highest total of any reserve on the team: he only trails guard Tyler Perkins, who has spent time as a starter. In those minutes, he’s racking up 2.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 0.2 assists and blocks apiece, nailing 59.5 percent of his shot attempts.

Lack of depth has been a concern for the Wildcats this season, wtih Moseley, Perkins and redshirt freshman guard Kris Parker often the only reserves to check into the game. Even worse, veteran forward Nnanna Njoku is out for the season after undergoing knee surgery, further depleting the Wildcats’ reserves. Enoch Boakye typically starts as a power forward/center in the low post but plays an average of 20.8 minutes per night, whether because of foul trouble or head coach Kyle Neptune’s preference for small-ball lineups. Even so, defense in the low post will be a massive concern for Villanova as they face Creighton’s 7-foot-1 Ryan Kalkbrenner, one of the best big men in the country this season.

Villanova’s only other options at forward are redshirt freshman Jordann Dumont, who has played less than 17 minutes across six games this season, and true freshman Malcolm Thomas who has yet to make an appearance.

The Wildcats will tip off against Creighton at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1.
