While he leads the nation in points per game this season, that wasn’t enough for Villanova forward Eric Dixon to earn a First Team All American nod from the Associated Press. Instead, he received a Third Team nod, his latest honor after landing on the All-Big East First Team.

Dixon, 24, averaged 23.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists this season, draining 42.2 percent of shots from three-point range on 223 attempts despite spending his first four years playing for the Wildcats as a traditional power forward.

He now ranks No. 2 on the Wildcats’ all-time scoring leaderboard with 2,235 points, just behind Kerry Kittles (2,243) for the top spot in Villanova history. With at least one game left in his collegiate career as the Wildcats will face Colorado in the College Basketball Crown invitational on Tuesday, April 1, Dixon has an excellent chance to cement himself as the top scorer in Villanova history.

Eric Dixon remains in the running for a bevy of national trophies including the Karl Malone Award, given annually to the top power forward in the nation and the Wooden, Naismith and Oscar Robertson awards, each presented on behalf of a different committee to the most outstanding player in the nation. Given that power forwards Johni Broome (Auburn) and JT Toppin (Texas Tech) surpassed Dixon on the AP’s first and second teams, he’ll probably miss the cut for the various awards, but will finish his career as a Wildcats’ legend regardless.
