Temple Dismisses Player Named in Point Shaving Scandal
Temple Men’s Basketball dismissed guard C.J. Hines from the program on Friday, Jan. 16 as a result of his potential involvement in the NCAA’s ongoing point shaving scandal, per a team release. Hines’ name appeared in a federal indictment unsealed on Jan. 15 in relation to the scandal.
Point shaving involves impacting the scoring margin in games — and thus the outcome of bets placed — by attempting to win or lose by a specific margin. Missing free throws provides one easy way of doing so.
Hines, transferred in from Alabama State (where his alleged involvement occurred) this offseason but never appeared in a game for the Owls as a result of an eligibility issue. The release suggested Hines’ lack of participation may have stemmed from a league investigation involving the point shaving scheme: “Temple had previously been notified by the NCAA of potential eligibility concerns involving Hines, and as a result, he had not participated in any athletic competition since enrolling at Temple while the review process was ongoing.”
The scheme also involved La Salle and three other A-10 teams, Duquesne, Fordham and Saint Louis, along with DePaul of the Big East.
