This is the ninth in a series of stories breaking down the Philadelphia Phillies’ Top 30 prospects heading into 2026.

The Phillies picked prep shortstop Matt Ferrara in the ninth round of the 2025 MLB Entry Draft, offering him $597,500… more than triple the slot value for his selection. That persuaded the six foot tall, 183 pound Ferrara to forego his commitment to the University of Pittsburgh.

Hailing from nearby Toms River, N.J., — a 15 minute drive from the Phillies’ High-A affiliate, the Jersey Shore BlueClaws — Ferrara’s chief calling card is his 70-grade speed. He led Toms River East to the semifinal round of the NJSIAA Group III playoffs as a senior. Ferrara slashed .405/.485/.667 with 13 doubles, three home runs, 34 runs, 22 RBI and 26 stolen bases. The moment wasn’t too bright for Ferrara: two of his home runs came in the playoffs, including a game-tying blast in the Raiders’ win over Brick Memorial.

With the rookie ball season already over, Ferrara made the leap right to Single-A and played 15 games, slashing .130/.266/.204 in his introduction to the pros. Plate discipline proved the most difficult adjustment. He struck out 23 times in 54 at-bats (42.6 percent), drawing just five walks. Even with the poor production, the 18-year-old reached base more than once per game. He didn’t flash his speed, however, waiting until the final game of the season to attempt his first steal. Watch to see if he bounces back as he acclimates to the delivery and timing of professional arms.

Ferrara made each of his 14 appearances at second base, committing three errors in 128 innings, but should have opportunities at shortstop in 2026. If the Phillies decide he doesn’t fit in the middle infield, Ferrara’s speed would aid a transition to the outfield.
