Phillies Top 30 Prospects No. 23: Romeli Espinosa, New Age Shortstop
This is the eighth in a series of stories breaking down the Philadelphia Phillies’ Top 30 prospects heading into 2026.
In ages past, the prototypical middle infielder was the shortest player on the team and often had the least power, priding himself on defense and relying on speed and contact at the plate. Unicorn shortstops like Oneil Cruz (Pirates) and Elly De La Cruz (Reds) challenged that template in recent seasons, standing 6-foot-6 or higher and peppering Statcast with the sort of numbers one expects out of the Aaron Judge’s and Shohei Ohtani’s of the world.
The Phillies may have a similar prospect in 17-year-old shortstop Romeli Espinosa, a 6-foot-4, 169 pound righty bat who slashed .282/.363/.430 with 13 extra base hits and 12 steals in 41 Dominican Summer League games last season, his first in professional baseball. The power isn’t quite there yet — he hit just two home runs in 2025 — but it’s easy to forecast for a young player with his frame. Espinosa already possesses above-average arm talent and speed, both crucial for a middle infielder.
Now listed on the Phillies’ rookie ball roster, Espinosa should make his stateside debut in 2026. He’s the youngest player on that squad, a testament to his fast start to the pros. Espinosa struck out 3.4 times for each walk he recorded in 2025 but still made contact at a strong rate, his 21.1 strikeout percentage better than average for a player of his stature. If he can maintain his bat-to-ball skills as he gains height and moves through the system, that will make his already-fascinating profile even more unique.
