Phillies Top 30 Prospects No. 20: Switch-Hitting Shortstop Juan Parra
This is the eleventh in a series of stories breaking down the Philadelphia Phillies’ Top 30 prospects heading into 2026.
The Phillies signed 17-year-old Venezuelan shortstop Juan Parra for $550,000 in January 2026, bringing in a 6-foot-1 switch-hitter who weighs 186 pounds and could add sneaky power for a middle infielder as he continues to mature.
Parra will make his professional debut in the Phillies’ Dominican Summer League program this season, although he won’t step to the plate at Citizens Bank Park for several years. He earns rave reviews for his work ethic and enters the system with more experience than the average international signee. Before earning a professional contract, Parra studied under 18-year big league veteran and former Phillies’ outfielder Bobby Abreu at the latter’s big league training academy.
Naturally right-handed, Parra reportedly enjoys more success when batting as a lefty. If he struggles to develop on the other side of the plate, Parra could focus on batting left-handed full time. Right now, his ability to hit for average, his defensive skills and his speed grade as average to above-average. MLB.com gives Parra a subpar 40-grade for power, but his projectible frame, youth and work ethic could change that in a hurry.
MLB Draft and minor leagues writer Alex Jensen compared Parra to Phillies international signee Francisco Renteria, who earned a $4 million bonus this winter. “Signed for one-eighth the amount of Renteria, I could be convinced I prefer Parra as a prospect,” Jensen said. That’s an aggressive take, but Parra’s first season of professional baseball will provide a better idea of where he belongs in the prospect rankings.
