Phillies Top 30 Prospects No. 14: Durable Jean Cabrera
This is the seventeenth in a series of stories breaking down the Philadelphia Phillies’ Top 30 prospects heading into 2026.
Jean Cabrera signed with the Phillies in July 2019 as an international free agent out of Maracay, Venezuela. Still just 24 years old, the lanky right-hander is on the cusp of making his big league debut. Cabrera got a late start to professional baseball, as the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the entire 2020 minor league season, pushing his Dominican Summer League debut to 2021.
He churned through the DSL despite the long layoff, posting a 1.54 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 52.2 innings pitched (13 starts) that season, skipping over rookie ball to Single-A the following season. There he struggled for two seasons, his walks surging in 2022; while his numbers improved the following season, he bounced on and off the Development List.
At six feet tall and 145 pounds, there are some concerns about Cabrera’s long-term durability, but he’s made it through five seasons as a professional pitcher without missing major time. He also cleared 100 innings pitched in each of the past two seasons, building up to 137 innings (26 starts) and a 3.81 ERA in Double-A Reading in 2025. With a five-pitch mix (two-seam, four-seam, changeup, sweeper, slider), Cabrera possesses a starter’s arsenal and the ability to spot the ball where he wants it, although his command lapsed at times in 2022 and 2025.
He limits home runs (0.62 per nine innings over the course of his minor league career) and induces more ground outs than air outs, limiting the damage opposing teams can do even without overwhelming stuff. If the Phillies continue to build up his workload, Cabrera could become a quality inning eater at the back end of a big league rotation.
