Villanova HC Kevin Willard Remains Maryland Fans’ Biggest Focus
Villanova head coach Kevin Willard is the gift that keeps on giving for Maryland fans, with College Park media overreacting in droves to his viral joke in the Wildcats’ Round of 64 loss to Utah State.
“I’m gonna fire my staff,” Willard deadpanned during a sideline interview with Villanova trailing 22-13, the Aggies exposing their defense repeatedly. “We’ve given up eight points on underneath out-of-bounds defense… The only thing I’m gonna do is fire them and get a new staff.”
Willard cracked a hint of a smile during the exchange and clarified he was joking in a postgame press conference, but that didn’t stop the internet from taking the clip and running with it… and a good number of the most vocal critics, like the radio spot below, came from the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) area.
Before agreeing to terms with the Wildcats on March 30, 2025, Willard spent the three seasons prior in College Park, Md., leading the Terrapins to the Sweet Sixteen during his last season at the helm. That partnership soured fast, however, with former Maryland athletic director Damon Evans jumping ship for SMU as the Terrapins started their tournament run.
Willard isn’t prone to ‘coach speak.’ He’ll say what’s on his mind and wasted no time expressing his displeasure with Evans’ departure in press conferences throughout Maryland’s tournament run, saying he wasn’t sure whether a new athletic director would prioritize basketball or let it fall to the wayside. Making it clear that his own future with Maryland was in doubt drew the ire of the Terrapins’ faithful, especially during the program’s deepest run in a decade, and doubly so once Willard officially joined Villanova.
Something to Root For
It doesn’t help that the Terrapins went 12-21 in their first season under new head coach Buzz Williams, giving their fans little to root for on their home turf.
A small, vocal contingent of Maryland fans showed up to the Wildcats’ Feb. 7 win over Georgetown in Washington, D.C., a move that Willard poked fun at before the season started, saying he hoped his presence would help raise funds for Hoyas’ head coach and longtime friend Ed Cooley. After the game, Willard put Maryland fans on blast when a Terrapins’ beat reporter asked about their presence… once again doing so in colorful fashion.
“They wasted a Saturday,” Willard said. “I don’t know what the f*** they were doing. They got nothing better to do on a Saturday than come look at my bald ass, I don’t know what they’re doing.”
Despite their atrocious season, Maryland won their first game in the Big Ten Tournament, upsetting Oregon in the No. 16/No. 17 game. That gave the Terrapins a postseason win, something that Villanova didn’t manage despite their 24-9 finish: Georgetown upset the Wildcats in the Big East quarterfinals, the loss of freshman forward Matt Hodge to an ACL tear putting their small-ball style under the microscope. They then washed out against Utah State. Terrapins fans were quick to point out that they managed more postseason wins than Willard’s squad did, doing so in largely one-sided interactions… most unsuitable for print.
Rivalries — even one-sided ones — are what makes college basketball great. Given the messy divorce, a home-and-home series isn’t likely: a Maryland win would provide far more attention than a Villanova win would, but one can dream that Willard decides to embrace the villain role in the coming years.
