Former Villanova wing Zion Stanford will enter the transfer portal per a report from Ken Jackson of Sky Limit Sports. Stanford departed the team in the final week of the regular season and, with at least one season of eligibility remaining, this was a long-expected move.

He stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 205 pounds, possessing the size and physicality to drive inside while remaining a threat from range. A Philadelphia native, Stanford transferred to Villanova after two seasons at Temple. While head coach Kevin Willard described Stanford as a big part of the team’s plans during a preseason media session, an ankle injury suffered in October derailed his start to the season and he never managed to secure a consistent spot in the lineup.

Stanford appeared in ten games during his Villanova tenure, averaging 5.1 minutes and 1.3 points. During his sophomore breakout with the Owls he put up 13.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists, making 34.9 percent of his three-point shots and typically rotating in off the bench. Given his injury woes, Stanford could argue for a medical redshirt and win another season of eligibility: as it stands, he’s a rising senior.

A trendy transfer with rising stock last offseason, Stanford could look to reboot his career in the lower levels of Division I or double down in an attempt to prove his power conference bona fides.

With nine players with remaining eligibility, Villanova will have at least six spots to fill on their roster heading into next season… but more players could transfer away. Click here for a breakdown of the Wildcats’ offseason roster.
