Phillies Prospect Watch: Graves, Marquez Fan Nine

Phillies affiliates went 4-1 on Saturday, May 9, with pitching prospects Mavis Graves and Ramon Marquez each striking out nine batters in headliner performances.

Triple-A Lehigh Valley lost 9-7, allowing six runs in the first three innings. They managed to dig out of that early hole with the help of Buffalo errors and two doubles from former Pirate Liover Peguero… but Alan Rangel, who filled in for five innings out of the bullpen after the early pitching woes, gave up three runs and earned the loss. Rangel also fanned seven batters, while center fielder Steward Berroa drew three walks.

Double-A Reading won 5-1, left-hander Adam Seminaris starting them off with five scoreless innings. Left fielder Dylan Campbell hit a two-run homer, Raylin Heredia and Alex Binelas singled twice, and Aroon Escobar added two walks and a steal.

High-A Jersey Shore won 10-5 behind five strong innings from Graves, who allowed one run and struck out nine batters on 79 pitches. Devin Saltiban and Nick Biddison each hit two doubles, the former knocking in five runs.

Threshers Thrash

Single-A Clearwater played a late doubleheader after a three hour and 33 minute rain delay, sweeping both legs. Phillies 2025 first round pick Gage Wood wasn’t as sharp as usual, issuing four walks over 2.2 innings, and got the hook after two earned runs and 68 pitches. Outfielder Griffin Burkholder went 2-for-3 with a homer and a double, knocking in three runs, and shortstop Juan Villavicencio added his own two-bagger. Cody Bowker earned the win with four scoreless relief innings, striking out nine batters and allowing one hit.

Villavicencio went 2-for-3 with a triple and a caught stealing in game two; left fielder Jonathan Hogart (2-for-3 with a homer), first baseman Nolan Beltran (1-for-3 with a double and a walk) and catcher/designated hitter Alirio Ferrebus (1-for-4 with a double) also managed extra base hits. Ramon Marquez started, covering four innings and striking out nine batters. He allowed two runs, neither of them earned after a Hogart error; Gabe Craig allowed one run but earned the save.
