Phillies Top 30 Prospects No. 4: Gage Wood At Home in the Spotlight
This is the twenty-seventh in a series of stories breaking down the Philadelphia Phillies’ Top 30 prospects heading into 2026.
Gage Wood missed close to two months of his junior season at Arkansas with a shoulder injury, but that didn’t stop the right-hander from striking out batters at a meteoric pace, amassing 69 strikeouts to just seven walks across 37.2 innings with the Razorbacks. He also saved his best for the brightest moments, pitching a solo no-hitter in the College World Series.
Although he struck out 19 batters, Wood still managed to pitch an efficient outing, needing just 119 pitches to complete the feat. He carried a perfect game into the eighth inning, at which point a breaking pitch got away from him and hit a batter. His ability to excel under pressure — the Razorbacks faced elimination in that game — helped earn the Phillies’ first round (No. 26 overall) pick in the 2025 MLB Entry Draft. Wood made his professional debut in September, pitching two innings for Single-A Clearwater at the end of the year.
As a 22-year-old with college experience, Wood should rise through the system quickly if he can stay healthy. 2025 marked his first season in the starting rotation and, while the Phillies will likely try to build him into a starter, Wood’s profile fits that of a reliever better right now. He relies on two (phenomenal) pitches, a lively 70-grade fastball that sits in the mid-to-high 90s and a snappy curveball that could use some touch.
Wood’s ability to spot the ball where he wants it bodes well for a move to the rotation, but he’ll almost certainly need to develop his slider and changeup in order to become a big league starter.
