Phillies Prospect Watch: Andrew Painter, Jean Cabrera Bounce Back

Phillies affiliates went 1-2 on Tuesday, July 21 despite strong outings from a pair of top pitchers.

Triple-A Lehigh Valley lost 2-1 despite five strong innings from 2021 first round pick Andrew Painter, who struck out eight and allowed two runs. Painter allowed seven hits but worked his way out of danger with strikeouts, landing 64 of 87 pitches for strikes and issuing just one walk. He wore the loss on a quiet day for the IronPigs’ offense: four batters reached base at least twice, including Keaton Anthony (2-for-4 with a double) and Paul McIntosh (3-for-4 with a double) but they couldn’t string together any rallies.

Jean Cabrera, who the Phillies designated for assignment earlier in July, made his first start in more than three weeks and pitched six scoreless innings, needing just 68 pitches to do so as he drew plenty of soft contact. Double-A Reading won 4-1 behind his efforts, an important step in the right direction for the organization’s No. 13 prospect.

Single-A Clearwater lost 6-5, racking up ten hits and nine singles. Center fielder Griffin Burkholder (2-for-5 with a double) notched the only extra base hit; third baseman Robert Phelps (3-for-4 with two steals) and right fielder Nathan Humphreys (2-for-5) each enjoyed multi-hit games. Starter Sean Youngerman pitched four scoreless innings before the Threshers’ bullpen unraveled.

High-A Jersey Shore saw their game postponed due to inclement weather.
