Eric Dixon Makes Oscar Robertson Award Watchlist

Villanova forward Eric Dixon leads the nation in scoring with 24.2 points per game, has his name in the picture as an NBA Draft pick even as a 24-year-old — much older than the typical lottery pick — and is in the running for the Wooden Award, awarded to the most outstanding men’s and women’s college basketball players each season: one of the most prestigious awards in the sport. Now Dixon, who scored his 2,000th career point during Villanova’s Saturday, Feb. 1 loss to Creighton, is in the running for the Oscar Robertson Award, given to the most outstanding player in college basketball (similar to the Wooden Award, but issued by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association).
The USBWA named a 50 player shortlist for the award on Monday, Feb. 3 and, to no one’s surprise, Dixon made the cut. Dixon would be the second Wildcat to win the award after two-time NCAA champion and current New York Knicks standout Jalen Brunson, who did so during the 2017-18 season.
Right now, Eric Dixon is probably a long shot to bring home the trophy in spite of his success. Players like Duke’s Cooper Flagg and Auburn’s Johni Broome currently sit atop the odds list for the Wooden Award, and the two trophies almost always go to the same individual.
Other Big East players on the watchlist include Kam Jones (Marquette), Alex Karaban (UConn), and RJ Luis (St. John’s): for the full list, click here.
