Phillies Prospect Watch: Andrew Painter Firing On All Cylinders
Phillies 2021 first round pick Andrew Painter made the best start of his big league career on Saturday, Aug. 22, fanning eight batters across seven innings of one-run ball for the flaming-hot Fightins; the rest of the organization went 1-3 with a rainout for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Despite going undefeated in postseason pool play, the Phillies’ Dominican Summer League team saw their season come to an end with a 9-3 loss to the Padres’ Gold team. Top outfield prospect Francisco Renteria went 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and two runs scored; right fielder Elian Adames, an 18-year-old from the Dominican Republic, went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, but reliever Jorge Mitre got shelled for five runs in the sixth inning as the Padres pulled away.
Double-A Reading won 5-2, scoring the decisive runs in the ninth inning. Shortstop Bryan Rincon homered, singled and walked, third baseman Carson DeMartini drew three walks and Pedro León, Raylin Heredia and Raider Tello each reached base twice, contributing to the Fightin Phils’ game-winning rally.
Right-handed Jean Cabrera fired five innings, allowing just one unearned run on an error from Rincon; Cabrera, who’s struggled mightily this season, allowed six hits to three strikeouts but managed to wriggle out of danger.
High-A Jersey Shore lost 2-1 in ten innings. Lefty starter Cade Obermueller allowed one run in four frames, striking out five batters on 80 pitches, but a lack of offense sank the BlueClaws in extras. Single-A Clearwater lost 9-6 as their pitching staff got knocked around in a bullpen game. Infielders like 2026 pick Reece Moroney (3-for-5 with a double) and Nolan Beltran (1-for-3 with two walks) each made it on base three times; Matt Ferrara managed two singles, while Jonathan Hogart made a pitching cameo to relieve the Threshers’ depleted staff.
