76ers Name St. Joseph’s Alumnus Jameer Nelson New GM

The 76ers found their new general manager, promoting team scout and G-League general manager Jameer Nelson, a Southeastern Pennsylvania local who graduated from Chester High School and St. Joseph’s University, per a report from ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania.
Nelson, 43, spent much of the last five years as an executive within the 76ers organization with their G-League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats. A point guard during his playing days, Nelson led Chester to the 2000 PIAA 4A state championship, then served as a four year starter with the Hawks. His collegiate accolades include a unanimous selection as the 2000-01 national freshman of the year, a trio of First Team All-A10 honors and the 2003-04 national player of the year award after leading St. Joseph’s to the Elite Eight and a 30-2 record. The Hawks later retired Nelson’s No. 14 jersey.
The Denver Nuggets selected Nelson in the first round of the 2004 NBA Draft and he enjoyed a 14 year professional career, spending much of it with the Orlando Magic, with whom he earned an All-Star game nod in 2009. Serving as general manager of the Blue Coats, Nelson’s teams amassed an 85-62 record across five seasons.
With the Philadelphia 76ers’ future in flux due to questions about the durability of superstar Joel Embiid, Nelson enters his new position with significant decisions looming.
