Villanova Men’s Basketball legend and two-time national champion Jalen Brunson has had a year for the ages, winning an NBA Cup Championship, an NBA Championship, and MVP honors for both events. He also won a trio of ESPYs during the 2026 ceremony, held on Wednesday, July 15: for best male athlete, best NBA player, and best championship performance.

Brunson didn’t receive any votes for league MVP following the regular season, but his playoff performance — 32.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game — helped put him over the top for the ESPYs. After a selection committee chooses who to nominate, fans get to vote on their favorite performers. The Knicks’ rabid fanbase (and, of course, Villanova’s) and Brunson’s postseason for the ages, which included 45 points in the championship-clinching win, also played a role.

Brunson’s career ESPY count is up to four, as he also won best college athlete following the 2017-18 season, one that saw him win the Wooden Award and his second national championship with Villanova. The diminutive point guard underwent surgery on his left hand and wrist earlier this offseason in order to correct a bothersome tendon, but the six-to-eight week recovery timeline should have him back on the court well before the Knicks begin their title defense.
