Villanova legend Kyle Lowry announced his retirement from the NBA on Tuesday, July 7, marking the conclusion of his 20-year professional career. The six foot tall, 196 pound point guard won an NBA Championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019 and earned six All-Star selections, amassing 16,373 points and 7,110 assists.

Lowry signed a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Raptors: he spent part of the last three seasons in the city that started it all, Philadelphia. Lowry grew up in North Philly and attended Cardinal Dougherty High School before committing to Villanova. He played two seasons on the Main Line, making the Big East All-Freshman Team during his first season and second team all-conference honors in his second, finishing his Wildcats career with a run to the Elite Eight.

Lowry posted a six-minute video to his social media accounts announcing his retirement, giving a special shoutout to former head coach Jay Wright for teaching him how to be a man. Whether he decides to pursue a coaching career — a fitting path for many point guards, tasked with running their team on the court — remains unclear. After three years, however, Lowry will become eligible for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame… and sporting immortality likely awaits him.
