Villanova Football dismantled an overmatched Hampton Pirates squad on Saturday, Oct. 18, riding a 49-point first half to a 56-14 victory.

The Pirates couldn’t get out of their own way, as evidenced on the first drive of the game when they forced a Jack Barnum field goal try and promptly roughed the kicker, giving No. 15 Villanova (5-2, 4-1 CAA) new life. Wildcats quarterback Pat McQuaide capped the drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown.

The veteran quarterback dominated in the first half, completing 10 of 13 passes for 166 yards and five touchdowns despite coming out of the game after the break.

The Wildcats needed just one play to score on their next drive. After forcing a Pirates three-and-out, McQuaide found sophomore receiver Chris Colby for a 65-yard touchdown, the first of his college career. Hampton’s safeties showed a blitz, giving Colby time to get behind the secondary on a slant route and break loose for the end zone.

Another Pirates three-and-out (and subsequent 16-yard punt) gave Villanova the ball in enemy territory, prompting another quick touchdown from McQuaide to Lucas Kopecky.

Hampton picked up their first first down of the game early in the second quarter, shortly after a 34-yard deep shot from McQuaide to Luke Colella made it 28-0. Moments later the Wildcats’ defense joined the beast, with defensive lineman Obinna Nwodobo forced a fumble, scooped it up himself and rumbled 53 yards to the end zone.

Wildcats Pull Their Starters

Two more sacks ended Hampton’s next drive in a hurry, and McQuaide found Antonio Johnson and Sean Brodmik for touchdowns before the half ended, giving him five scoring passes on just 13 attempts… even as the Wildcats began to empty their bench.

No. 2 quarterback Tanner Maddocks led the Wildcats’ offense out of the half, running for 67 yards on five carries (including a long of 47 yards that set up an Eli Smith rushing touchdown) as he bled the clock out. Hampton managed a pair of touchdowns against Villanova’s reserves, but the Wildcats cruised to victory.

Up next, Villanova Football will host Albany at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25.
