Phillies’ Wood, Pan Pitch at Citizens Bank Park in Futures Game

Phillies 2025 first round pick Gage Wood started the All-Star Futures Game on Sunday, July 11, making his mound debut at Citizens Bank Park, the stadium he someday expects to call home. Wood, a six foot tall flamethrower, has a 3.44 ERA between Single-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading this season, striking out 79 batters across 55 innings (16 starts) as the Phillies monitor his inning count, perhaps in preparation for a call to the big leagues down the stretch.

The 22-year-old right-hander allowed one earned run in one inning of work during the Futures Game, but a decent share of the blame falls on his catcher. After allowing a leadoff single to Leo De Vries, Wood rebounded to record three straight outs… but a pair of stolen bases put De Vries in position to score on a single. 

Fellow Phillies pitching prospect Wen-Hui Pan — also rostered with Double-A Reading — entered with two outs and nobody on in the sixth. Pan pulled ahead 0-2 in the count before nibbling outside the strike zone, allowing Walker Jenkins to battle back for a walk.

His next pitch, a 96.1 mile per hour fastball down the pipe, left the yard as a two-run homer. Pan rebounded to end the inning with a strikeout, but the National League went on to lose the Futures Game.
