Penn Adds Former Top 100 Recruit Sir Mohammed
University of Pennsylvania head coach Fran McCaffery is building something special in West Philadelphia. The Penn Quakers managed to secure the commitment of Nasir “Sir” Mohammed, a rising junior who held the No. 60 spot on the ESPN Top 100 for the Class of 2024, per a Monday, May 11 post to Mohammed’s Instagram account.
Mohammed stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 215 pounds, a guard/wing who initially committed to Notre Dame and averaged 5.7 points and 2.6 assists across 16.3 minutes per game with the Fighting Irish last season. His shooting needs some work: he made 28.6 percent of threes and 54.5 percent of free throws last season, but a 59-of-127 clip from two-point range indicates Mohammed can succeed when he gets to the basket.
His commitment marks the second former top 100 recruit for McCaffery and the Quakers in as many seasons, joining forward TJ Power.
With high major programs pulling farther away from the rest of the pack in the era of Name, Image and Likeness deals — an added challenge for the Ivy League, which doesn’t allow athletic scholarships or direct pay-for-play initiatives from programs to their athletes — Penn has an excellent chance of making it back to the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row… especially if McCaffery can help revive Mohammed’s career like he did Power’s.
