Villanova secured a sloppy win against the outmatched Rider Broncs on Wednesday, November 27, winning 72-48 in spite of themselves.

The Wildcats played with their food, taking 38 of their 58 shots from three, and converting at a 39.5 percent clip. While far from an inspiring performance, that was more than enough for them to put Rider comfortably away. Four Wildcats hit double digits, led by a 16 point night from graduate forward Eric Dixon. Rider won the glass 33-32, but Villanova made up for it by forcing 17 turnovers to the Broncs’ eight.

The Wildcats’ long-range aggression came with the tradeoff of streaky accuracy, and it took most of the first half for them to establish a comfortable lead. The Broncs held the lead at two separate points in the first six minutes, and tied things up at another. Rider freshman and Delaware County product Flash Burton made a jumper at 4:37 to pull the Broncs within three, but from there it was off to the races.

Villanova closed out the half on a 13-0 run, including five points from Dixon in the last two minutes to make it 36-20.

Head coach Kyle Neptune made full use of his bench in the second half: the Wildcats’ starters took the court for just 116 of a possible 200 minutes.

Jhamir Brickus landed threes on consecutive possessions around the halfway mark, finishing his night at 5-for-7 from beyond the arc.

Villanova moves to 4-4 on the season. Up next, they’ll host the as-of-now No. 16 ranked Cincinnati Bearcats at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
