Villanova Loses Another Stunner to Georgetown 75-73

The Villanova Wildcats lost their regular season finale at Georgetown on Tuesday, March 4, falling 75-73 on another last minute layup.
The Wildcats (18-13, 11-9 Big East) allowed a 15-4 Hoyas run over the last three and a half minutes. Leading 71-69 with 1:46 to go, head coach Kyle Neptune called a timeout to draw up a play that would help Villanova maintain the lead. It went nowhere fast, ending in a contested three-point try from Eric Dixon, and a Jordan Burks dunk ultimlately put Georgetown in front 73-71 with 37 seconds to play. Although Jhamir Brickus netted a quick layup to tie the game, Jayden Epps dribbled out most of the clock for the Hoyas, then drove past Wooga Poplar for the go-ahead shot.

Villanova got the ball back with five seconds left, but Jordan Longino’s three-point try bounced away. The loss quashes any prayer the Wildcats might’ve had remaining of securing an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament.
Another Second Half Surge for Eric Dixon
Dixon led the field with 24 points despite the Hoyas’ holding him scoreless in the first half. Even with Dixon’s struggles, the Wildcats forced a 29-29 tie at the break with secondary scoring.
Georgetown opened the second half on an 8-0 run before the Wildcats began to find success from beyond the arc. Dixon, similarly, began to wake up, scoring 10 straight points for the Wildcats and 14 of 15 — the lone exception a Brickus free throw — giving Villanova their first lead of the second half.
An Epps triple put the Hoyas ahead 60-58, triggering an 11-0 run for the Wildcats that put them up 69-60 with just over three minutes to play… queuing their final, fateful tailspin.
Up next for Villanova is the Big East Tournament, which they’ll enter as the No. 6 seed, facing either DePaul or Seton Hall on Wednesday, March 12.
