Villanova Legend Jay Wright to ‘Step Back’ in Broadcasting Role
Longtime Villanova head coach and two-time national champion Jay Wright plans to step back from his broadcasting role with CBS Sports and TNT Sports, per an announcement from his Twitter account on Thursday, Aug. 28.
Wright, 63, retired from his role as Wildcats’ head coach following the team’s 2022 Final Four run, taking up with CBS Sports and TNT Sports as an analyst following his departure. He said he won’t step back from the networks entirely and didn’t rule out further appearances, but made it clear he wants to focus on his family and his current role as an advisor at Villanova.
Here’s his social media statement in full.
“After three amazing years with CBS Sports and TNT Sports, I’ve decided to step back from full-time broadcasting. It wasn’t an easy call, but it allows me to focus on my role as Special Assistant to the President at Villanova — and to spend quality time with my family,” Wright’s statement began.
“Huge thanks to the CBS Sports and TNT Sports teams. They’re truly the best in the business. I’m grateful for the incredible experiences and friendships. I look forward to staying connected and collaborating with them on future projects.”
CBS Sorts President and CEO David Berson replied with a statement of his own soon thereafter.
“Jay Wright is a Hall of Fame coach and a Hall of Fame person. He’s been a fantastic CBS Sports teammate. We will miss having him full-time, but I am excited that our relationship will continue with Jay contributing occasionally to our coverage.”
