Villanova Announces Signing of Buddy Simmons II
Villanova Men’s Basketball announced the signing of guard Darryl “Buddy” Simmons II on Wednesday, May 6, the fifth and final member of their transfer class so far to make his joining the Wildcats official.
Head coach Kevin Willard offered the following appraisal of Simmons’ talent and how he’ll fit with Villanova.
“Buddy is an experienced college guard who can score at all three levels,” Willard said. “His ability to stretch the defense as a 3-point threat will make an immediate impact on our team. We’re excited to welcome another gifted guard to Villanova.”
A 5-foot-11, 175 pound rising senior, Simmons averaged 16.4 points per game last season with St. Bonaventure, knocking down 42.5 percent of his shots. Prior to that, he spent a pair of seasons at Gardner-Webb.
Simmons’ signing marks a concerted effort from Villanova to add shooters to their roster: they also reeled in Cornell sniper Jake Fiegen, giving them the ability to stress opposing defenses from long range with a variety of options.
The Wildcats still have six open roster spots to make use of: they’ll need a center and a backup point guard, at minimum, with most of the rest of the spots likely to go to reserves.
