Phillies Top 30 Prospects No. 30: Rule 5 Sleeper Zach McCambley
This is one in a series of stories breaking down the Philadelphia Phillies’ Top 30 prospects heading into the 2026 MLB season.
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired right-hander Zach McCambley in the 2025 Rule 5 Draft, poaching him away from their National League East rival Miami Marlins in the process.
Selected out of Coastal Carolina in the third round of the 2020 draft as a potential starter, injuries pushed the 26-year-old Netcong, N.J. native out of the starting rotation in 2023 and threatened to derail his chance at a big league career. The 6-foot-2 McCambley remade himself as a reliever last season, pitching to a 2.90 ERA with 83 strikeouts in 62 innings: the Marlins managed his workload with care, giving him time on the Development List in July and August.
Per Rule 5 Draft stipulations, McCambley will have to spend the duration of the 2026 season on the Phillies’ 26-man roster — or the Injured List — in order for them to keep him, so prepare to see him early and often out of spring training. McCambley has plenty of swing-and-miss potential, averaging 1.20 strikeouts per inning in his professional career with a 2.7 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Last season, he put up his best performance since 2021 in both categories.
McCambley’s pitch arsenal includes a low-to-mid 90s fastball that’s gained velocity in recent years; a high 80s cutter that can induce groundballs, and his signature offering, a breaking ball that’s somewhere between a curveball and a slider. As with any pitcher in this velocity-crazed era, McCambley’s effectiveness will depend on his ability to stay healthy. If his injuries are behind him and 2025 is a sign of things to come, McCambley could fit right in with a Phillies squad looking to overhaul their bullpen. For now, he’s an intriguing question mark.
