Villanova Reaction: Stunner at the Garden Versus Bottom Seed Hoyas
Villanova Men’s Basketball dropped a 78-64 stunner to Georgetown in the quarterfinal round of the Big East Tournament on Thursday, March 12, heading home from Madison Square Garden empty-handed against the No. 11 seeded Hoyas.
After they managed to take care of business against DePaul and Xavier last week, the Wildcats’ expected slump from losing Matt Hodge to an ACL tear hit at the worst possible time. While they remain a near-lock for the NCAA Tournament at 24-8, Villanova is likely to drop down the standings, perhaps as far as a No. 9 or No. 10 seed, as a result of the loss.
The Wildcats forced ten turnovers in the first 13 minutes of play, scoring 16 points off those Hoyas’ mistakes and pushing their lead close to double digits. From there, Georgetown rectified their mistakes and began to pummel Villanova in the paint, winning 46-25 on the glass on a banner night for 7-foot-1 forward Julius Halaifonua. Here’s the (family friendly) reaction from fans and media as the Wildcats will need to wait another year to make it back to the Friday slate in the Big East Tournament for the first time since 2022.
