Former Villanova Wildcat and 2018 Final Four Most Outstanding Player Donte DiVincenzo will miss an indefinite amount of time with an injury to his left big toe, per a report from Shams Charania of ESPN. DiVincenzo, who plays for the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves, suffered the injury during the tail end of their Wednesday, Jan. 15 loss to the Golden State Warriors, a game in which he dropped a season-high 28 points.

After taking several days to evaluate the injury, the Timberwolves said that DiVincenzo suffered a Grade 3 sprain, which could indicate a complete tear of the ligaments in the affected toe. Right now he’s wearing a walking boot, and it’ll take time to determine exactly how long his recovery will take. He and the team are currently seeking a second opinion, perhaps to determine if surgery is needed to expedite his return timeline.

The injury comes at an awful time for the Timberwolves, currently on the edge of the playoff field as the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference, and for DiVincenzo himself, who started six games in a row before getting hurt after beginning the season off the bench.

It also prevented him from playing in the Timberwolves’ Jan. 17 game at the Knicks, who he helped reach the Eastern Conference semifinals last season alongside fellow Villanova alumni Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. That said, DiVincenzo received a video tribute from the Knicks during a preseason game, so he still managed to enjoy something of a homecoming.
