Villanova Bracketology: Tournament Odds Slashed in Half

Published

on

The Villanova Wildcats held firm in the NET rankings after a razor-thin home loss to a red-hot Creighton Blue Jays team, sitting at No. 60 in the list released on Sunday, Feb. 2.

The loss slashed their chances of making the NCAA Tournament almost in half, however, falling all the way down to 5.5 percent per teamrankings.com. Their chances of an at-large bid are down to 1.5 percent, so if they’re going to make the tournament this season, they’d almost certainly need to do so with a Big East Tournament championship.

Villanova holds an 0-5 record in Quadrant 1 matchups this season, with wins over both UConn and Cincinnati dropping down to Quad 2 as those teams fell out of the top 30 in the NET rankings; matching 3-2 records in Quadrants 2 and 3, and a 6-1 record in Quad 4. Recent game results provided another low blow for the Wildcats with prior opponents struggling, causing ugly early season losses to Virginia and St. Joseph’s to drop into Quad 3, ditto with Columbia into Quad 4. Villanova has just two wins outside their home turf this season, with 1-5 and 1-2 records on the road and at neutral sites, respectively.

The KenPom ratings, meanwhile, dropped the Wildcats two spots from No. 54 to No. 56. Villanova gets back in action at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5 when they travel to Chicago to face DePaul.
