Saint Joseph’s Men’s Basketball endured a roller coaster of a season last year: head coach Billy Lange departed for the New York Knicks in September, leaving associate head coach Steve Donahue — who caught on with the Hawks after his ouster at Penn earlier that year — to take the reins on the eve of the regular season.

The Hawks struggled to get much right early in the season, dropping a Big 5 game to Penn, then dismissed guard and lead scorer Deuce Jones II from the program mere weeks after his heroics in their duel with Temple at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Saint Joseph’s turned things around after a slow start to conference play, entering the A-10 Tournament as a dark horse candidate that lost in the semifinals; Donahue earned conference coach of the year honors for engineering the turnaround.

Looking to build on that momentum, the Hawks brought back key contributors like junior guard Jaiden Glover-Tosdano (6-foot-6, 206 pounds), who put up 15.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game while making 34.6 percent of three-point shots, and A-10 all-rookie team member Austin Williford (6-foot-4, 192 pounds), who averaged 26.4 minutes, 7.8 points and 4.7 rebounds while bouncing in and out of the starting lineup.

From there, Saint Joseph’s certainties taper off. Senior transfer Logan Carey (6-foot-3, 182 pounds) averaged 9.7 points and amassed 50 steals at Maine last season. A strong shooter who made 49.3 percent of shots from the field and 35.6 percent of threes, Carey will need to adjust to the A-10.

Something to Prove

Junior Khaafiq Myers (5-foot-10, 160 pounds) is a Philadelphia native who averaged 15.7 minutes per game with the Hawks last year but never turned the flashes he showed into an all-around performance. With an average of 2.3 assists in that limited time frame, Myers is likely the Hawks’ best option at point guard, but that key position is a major question mark.

Forwards Luis Nonfon (6-foot-7, 227 pounds) and Donovan Flamer (6-foot-9, 211 pounds) boast solid skill sets but played Division II basketball last season. With uncertainty in Saint Joseph’s lineup, one of them might need to make the jump to mid-major basketball in a hurry.

Graduate forward Sean Logan (6-foot-11, 240 pounds) could help the Hawks negotiate the loss of Justice Ajogbor graduating. No stranger to the A-10, Logan played at Davidson last season and led the conference in blocks per game (2.4). Logan played in 26 games, starting seven, and added 3.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per contest.

Junior guards Mekai Johnson (6-foot-5, 211 pounds) and Billy Rayer (5-foot-11, 192 pounds) both played sparingly last season. Senior forward Gavin Marrs (7-foot-0, 215 pounds), who dealt with injuries at Oregon State in recent seasons, and Will Lange (6-foot-5, 217 pounds), the son of the Hawks’ head coach, should see some occasional minutes in games already decided, as should sophomore guard Owen Verna (6-foot-3, 198 pounds), who redshirted last season.

Other newcomers for Saint Joseph’s include freshmen BJ Ranson (6-foot-3, 165 pounds), a three-star recruit who put up 22.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game as a season; forward Keoni Sacco (6-foot-10, 220 pounds) spent a prep season at Virginia’s Fork Union Military Academy, and Davis Kemper (6-foot-9, 217 pounds) adds another big body to the Hawks’ freshman class.
