Report: Seahawks to Release Villanova Football Product Isas Waxter II
The Seattle Seahawks are expected to release Villanova Football product and undrafted free agent Isas Waxter II, per a report from Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. Per Zenitz’s report, the team will try to stash him on the practice squad if he makes it through waivers.
Waxter endured an up-and-down preseason with Seattle. During the Seahawks’ Aug. 15 game against the Chiefs, his PFF grade of 78.1 ranked fifth-best on the team, but he also suffered some lapses in coverage that turned into big plays, both in preseason action and in training camp.
While Waxter didn’t make it through the Seahawks’ roster slim down from 90 players to 53, he could still catch on with the team (or another NFL club) as part of the 16 player practice squad, which gives fringe roster players a chance to train with the team and earn a salary in a sort of reserve role. A 6-foot-2, 215 pound defensive back who suited up at cornerback for Villanova football, Waxter has a bigger frame than most players at his position but is also a hair slower than the typical cornerback.
As such, safety might provide a more natural position for him as he continues to try to bring his NFL dreams to fruition.
Waxter spent six seasons with Villanova football, including a medical redshirt in 2022 after an injury caused him to miss the entire season. He racked up three interceptions — all of them during the 2023 season, his first as an All-American — 75 solo tackles, 19 passes defended, three forced fumbles and seven tackles for loss during 46 games in his Wildcats’ career.
