The Dominican Summer League season began as the calendar flipped to June, meaning that Phillies’ top international prospect Francisco Renteria, signed out of Venezuela for $4 million this winter, is playing his first games for the organization.

The 17-year-old stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 216 pounds, a speedy outfielder with five-tool potential. Through six games with the Phillies’ Dominican affiliate, he’s playing as advertised, slashing .500/.600/.800 with three triples, four walks and five strikeouts through 25 plate appearances. The Dominican Summer League doesn’t provide defensive statistics, but his combination of arm strength and speed give him potential as a steady contributor in center field.

Per MLB Pipeline, Renteria currently ranks as the No. 3 prospect in the Phillies’ organization; with Aidan Miller injured and Gage Wood skyrocketing through the system, Renteria should climb up the list soon. He isn’t yet ranked among the top 100 overall prospects — Miller and Wood hold the No. 14 and No. 68 spots, respectively — but should gain steam on that list as well.

MLB Pipeline lists Renteria’s expected debut as 2031. He’ll likely spend all of this season in the Dominican while adjusting to the rigors of professional baseball, but his hot start could indicate he’s ready for rookie ball as soon as next season. Looking around the minor leagues, players like the Brewers’ Jesús Made or the A’s Leo De Vries are both 19 years old and expected to debut this season, barely two years after signing international deals. As such, a faster track for Renteria isn’t entirely out of the question.
