Philadelphia Product Matt Gilhool Enters Transfer Portal
Former four-star and Philadelphia product Matt Gilhool entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, April 1, per a report from 247Sports. A 6-foot-11, 213 pound power forward who was a borderline top 100 recruit during his time at William Penn Charter, Gilhool attended LSU for his freshman season and took a redshirt year. As such, he retains four seasons of eligibility.
Because the Tigers went through a head coaching change, firing Matt McMahon in favor of Will Wade, Gilhool had the opportunity to hit the portal before the 2025-26 season officially ended. He averaged 16 points, nine rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game as a senior in high school. He’s lanky for a post player but can also stretch the floor, sinking 31 percent of his three-point attempts during his final season of EYBL play.
Villanova didn’t target Gilhool during the Kyle Neptune era, but with Kevin Willard looking to fortify his roster down low heading into next season, the local kid could get a look. Gilhool chose LSU over an initial top five of Alabama, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Mississippi State and Tennessee, so those schools could have a leg up in his recruiting. However, former Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery now leads the Pennsylvania Quakers, while Georgia Tech fired head coach Damon Stoudamire at the end of this season.
