Philadelphia native and South Carolina Women’s Basketball head coach Dawn Staley led her team past undefeated UConn in the Final Four on Friday, April 3, stunning the Huskies 62-48 with a second half comeback.

After the final buzzer, Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma got in a verbal spat with Staley, cameras catching the duo exchanging heated words as officials tried to separate them. Asked about the exchange in a postgame press conference, Staley pushed the focus on Auriemma… who did, indeed, start the altercation.

“You can ask Geno the question. He’s the one that initiated the conversation,” Staley said. “I don’t want what happened there to dampen what we were able to accomplish today.”

Auriemma, for his part, expressed frustration with the referees during the third quarter and suggested that Staley snubbed him during the pregame ceremonies, making him wait for a handshake. Regarding the altercation itself, Auriemma didn’t reveal what he said.

“Why would I say it? I said what I said,” Auriemma said. “And obviously she didn’t like it. I just told the truth.”

While Dawn Staley has served as South Carolina’s head coach since 2008 and played for the Virginia Cavaliers in college, she remains close to the community that raised her, pledging to match any donations made to Temple Women’s Basketball during an October 2025 fundraiser.
