Phillies Prospect Watch: Quality Start for Andrew Painter

Phillies affiliates went 3-1 on Friday, July 31, but the farm system’s biggest win came in the big leagues where Andrew Painter fired a quality start in his return to the mound. The 2021 first round pick allowed two earned runs in six innings and left the game with his team in position to win before a late bullpen blowup: he also struck out six batters.

Triple-A Lehigh Valley won 7-2 as Keaton Anthony (1-for-3 with two walks), Felix Reyes (2-for-4 with a walk) and 29-year-old catcher Payton Henry (3-for-4 with a double), a recent free agent signee, each reached base three times. Alex McFarlane maintained his spotless ERA with the IronPigs, fanning three batters on 13 pitches in a clean ninth inning.

Double-A Reading won 6-5 on a walk-off single from Pedro León. Shortstop Bryan Rincon (3-for-4 with a walk) finished a triple shy of the cycle; first baseman Alex Binelas went 2-for-4 with a homer. Phillies 2025 first round pick Gage Wood made his longest professional start in terms of pitches thrown (84) but allowed four earned runs over 4.1 innings. Despite eight strikeouts recorded, Wood allowed eight hits.

Juan Villavicencio homered in a 6-4 loss for High-A Jersey Shore; Single-A Clearwater won 10-5. Phillies’ 2026 fifth round pick William Gasparino hit a grand slam for the Threshers, and Jonathan Hogart also left the yard. Carson DeMartini walked twice but got picked off and caught stealing.
