Villanova Women’s Basketball lost their first game in nearly two months, falling 85-69 at Marquette on Sunday, Jan. 4. As a road game, this counts as a Quadrant 1 loss in the women’s NET rankings.

While the Wildcats (12-3, 5-1 Big East) shot marginally worse than the Golden Eagles (49 percent to 52 percent) they made just six of 22 three-point attempts. Marquette converted  a much healthier 11 of 18 and 17 free throws to the Wildcats’ five. Golden Eagles’ guard Halle Vice led the scoring with 32 points and 11 rebounds, while Skylar Forbes and Jaidynn Mason each contributed 20 points. Together, the trio accounted for 84.7 percent of Marquette’s scoring.

Villanova sophomore Jasmine Bascoe countered with 20 points of her own.

The Golden Eagles made four of six threes in the first quarter, pulling ahead with a 10-0 run after the Wildcats led 4-2 early. While Villanova managed to pull within two points on three separate occasions in the second quarter, each time Marquette managed to respond with a basket of their own before the Wildcats could knot the score.

The third quarter sank the Wildcats for good, as a 4-of-12 shooting performance with seven turnovers allowed Marquette to push their lead as high as 18 points. A 10-1 run from Villanova closed the gap to 77-67 in the fourth quarter, but with just 2:24 to play, the Wildcats couldn’t draw any closer.

Up next, Villanova will host Xavier at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8.
