Villanova Reaction: St. John’s Overpowers Wildcats in South Philly
Villanova Men’s Basketball put up a valiant effort in their Saturday, Jan. 17 loss to St. John’s at Xfinity Mobile Arena, fighting back from a double digit deficit in the second half, but they couldn’t complete the comeback.
The Red Storm outscored the Wildcats (14-4, 5-2 Big East) 42-22 in the paint and put up 27 points in the first nine minutes of the second half. While Villanova made 11 of 26 three-point shots, cutting the deficit to two possessions on four separate occasions in the final seven minutes, St. John’s ability to outmuscle the Wildcats meant they could only make up so much lost ground.
It’s not a fluke at this point. These Wildcats are going to struggle against teams with size — size that most programs in a major conference will have. Villanova’s defensive efficiency still ranks in the top 50 nationally and they’re still talented enough to win a good number of those games (recent games against Providence and DePaul, for instance), but that weakness could prove the difference between an NCAA Tournament berth and a magical March run.
Head coach Kevin Willard spoke after the game about how his young team will take time to develop the physicality they need in games like this, a journey he said he’s looking forward to guiding them through… although turnover will occur in the era of the transfer portal.
Here’s the reaction from fans and media after a tough Big East battle that didn’t go the Wildcats’ way.
Defense against physical opponents is really a problem for this team.
Lets keep our heads up, improve and get back in the gym.
Georgetown next.

Villanova is just not built to win against teams like St. Johns.
They just don’t have the size needed to beat them.
Committing 21 fouls also doesn’t help…
Onto Georgetown Wednesday https://t.co/FYNO3FAX7C

Villanova coach Kevin Willard compared the struggles of his young players against St. John’s to a bottle of wine that hasn’t aged.
“If you wait three years and you let it age and let it mature, it’s usually really, really good.”

2 things can be true: St John’s is just the more talented team. But at the same time, Nova did not play up to the standards that we have seen them play this year. Forget about this game, and win the next one at the Finn

Askew with another three to make it 36-35. He leads the field with 10 points off the bench. St. John's calls timeout with 21 on the shot clock, 32.3 seconds remaining in the first half.

Just when Villanova closed it, it slips.
Villanova hasn’t made a field goal in just about three minutes.
St. John’s has retaken a double-digit lead, 77-66.

A rare occasion where Acaden Lewis looks like a freshman. And it's hurting Villanova. The Wildcats are down 10, 49-39, with 15:12 to go. Lewis is 1-for-7 and has five turnovers (and five assists).
