Villanova Men’s Basketball Stifles Penn 93-49

Villanova Men’s Basketball obliterated the Penn Quakers 93-49 on Tuesday, November 19, moving to 1-1 in Big Five pool play this season to qualify for the third place game in the second annual Big Five Classic.
The Quakers made just 14 of 52 shots and a marginally better 29.2 percent of their threes, going nearly 14 minutes without making a basket on either side of the half, a run of 16 consecutive missed shots. Villanova’s aggressive defense helped Penn draw 20 fouls, turning into 30 attempts from the free throw line, but the Quakers made just 14 of those in a pitiful performance.
Eric Dixon led the Wildcats with 23 points, as he has in every game he’s played this season, while Jhamir Brickus went a perfect 4-for-4 from three. Tyler Perkins, who transferred to Villanova from Penn this offseason, made his second start of the season after Wooga Poplar was benched for being late to a team meeting. Perkins contributed 12 points and nine rebounds in 31 minutes, while Poplar added 19 points off the bench.
Despite their brutal overall shooting performance, the Quakers nailed threes on each of their first two possessions, giving them an early 6-4 lead. Senior guard Jordan Longino responded with a three of his own, and the Wildcats never trailed again.
Penn wasn’t yet ready to go away, though, and a Johnnie Walter three tied the game at 26 with just under nine minutes to go in the first half. From there, the Wildcats went into the half on a 17-0 run. The Quakers next points came at 18:22 in the second half, a Walter free throw, while they didn’t make another shot from the field until the 15 minute mark, by which point Villanova led 56-31.
The Wildcats never took their foot off the gas, making seven three pointers in the last six minutes on the way to the 44 point win.
Villanova Men’s Basketball improves to 3-3 on the season. Up next they’ll face the University of Maryland at the Empire Classic in Newark, N.J., with the opening tipoff set for 1pm on Sunday, November 24.
