Villanova guard Bryce Lindsay ranks No. 18 in the nation in scoring with an average of 23 points per game this season. Perhaps more impressive, this is only the redshirt sophomore’s first season in the starting lineup. Lindsay came off the bench at JMU last season, winning the Sun Belt’s Sixth Man of the Year award, and then started the season as a reserve for Villanova.

A 22 point outburst against BYU in the Wildcats’ opener prompted head coach Kevin Willard to promote Lindsay to the starting five, and his silky shot already has pundits preparing for his leap to the NBA.

Following the Wildcats’ 87-77 win over Duquesne on Saturday, Nov. 15, when Lindsay racked up 18 points, three assists, two steals and no turnovers, he made a brief appearance on national television, taking part in an interview with the TNT Sports studio crew. During the segment, Lindsay described how his work ethic this offseason has translated to wins on the court.

Lindsay to the NBA?

After the interview, the studio crew, which includes Tim Doyle, former NBA standouts Jalen Rose and Jamal Mashburn and former Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl, discussed Lindsay’s best NBA comparison.

Doyle describes Lindsay’s shooting motion as similar to future hall of famer Steph Curry and, while the rest of the crew shot down that comparison as far-fetched, Mashburn compared Lindsay to Mike Bibby, a No. 2 overall pick out of Arizona in 1998. “He’s kind of an off guard, combo guard, that can eventually be a point guard at the next level,” Mashburn said.

While Bibby, now the head coach of the Sacramento Kings, might not have played like Steph Curry, a 14-year NBA career that finished with 1,001 games played and more than 14,000 points is nothing to sneer at… and a testament to the caliber of player Villanova has in Lindsay.
