Villanova Football: Court Docket Now Available in Pat McQuaide’s Eligibility Suit

With the start of a new work week, the updated case docket from Villanova quarterback Pat McQuaide’s lawsuit against the Patriot League regarding his eligibility for the 2026-27 season is now available in the Cuyahoga County, Ohio Court of Common Pleas database.

Per the docket, Judge Timothy McCormick, who oversaw McQuaide’s initial lawsuit against the NCAA, “the court grants McQuaide’s motion for a preliminary injunction against the Patriot League… and orders the following: McQuaide is immediately eligible to play football this 2026-27 season with Villanova University in the Patriot League.”

The document goes on to state that the Patriot League can’t prohibit McQuaide from playing, that the NCAA’s new five-in-five eligibility model doesn’t apply, and the conference also can’t attempt to punish McQuaide under the NCAA’s Rule of Restitution if the initial court decision were somehow overturned.

The Wildcats argued in a letter from Senior Associate Athletic Director of Compliance Katie LeGrand that McQuaide’s senior year of high school in 2020-21 was unduly impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic, forcing McQuaide to spend an extra year in junior college as a result. Per the docket, LeGrand’s letter, “which provides compelling explanation for McQuaide’s unique hardships and for disregarding his detour through the non-NCAA affiliated junior college program,” played a role in the court’s decision, as did the fact that preventing McQuaide from receiving immediate eligibility would cause irreparable harm; in contrast, allowing him to play wouldn’t cause harm to any other parties. 

McQuaide started Villanova’s Friday, Aug. 29 Patriot League opener against William & Mary and had an up-and-down performance, making plenty of strong throws before throwing a back-breaking interception. The Wildcats entered the season ranked in the top ten in the FCS a season after making the league semifinals with McQuaide at the helm.
